Hi. I am so happy to be here, blogging again (about an actual topic this time (social media marketing) unlike in 2018 haha).
Okay so the reason i am here is because i have tried it all when it comes to social media and not to say I’ve failed, no. I have just realised which type of social media platform do i find the most joy in and want to throw myself into immensely so here we are. Back to my roots because this is where my love for the digital space started, i taught myself how to create a website in 2017, which turned into creating websites and social media platforms for my friends businesses and now social media managing and more.
I know that blogging about social media marketing will enable me to share more of the knowledge i have and keep obtaining in this topic. Unlike when i have to record long videos of me speaking which clearly i have realised i do not enjoy as much. That brings me to what i want to talk about on this blog, the mistakes i made in 2023 that i by publishing this blog on my social media marketing mistakes, do not want to repeat! I truly regret ever letting go of blogging even though i had no choice at the time. Not doing it sooner in 2023 like i kept wanting to is my even bigger regret.
Anyway, better late than never right; the first mistake i made in 2023 was;
- Knowing that i love to blog, wanted to blog, but ignored all that because short form videos are soo new and so happening. Do you know what’s worse? in 2023 i also knew that blogging is one of the tools of social media marketing that are not only making a come back but remain being a great source of organic traffic from organic searches on google when done right. If you are like me and love the idea of writing? please do start a blog for your respective field or topic. The lesson here is to not neglect what matters more in the long run for what is current. Who knows the future of short form videos? but blogging is definitely the OG of digital marketing, actually you can say of social media marketing because remember Tumblr?
- The second mistake i made in my social media marketing journey in 2023 was thinking because i have so many skills in this field, then i should talk about all of them at once on my social media platforms. They are not kidding when they say niche down yoow! in 2022 i realised that i was being a jack of all trades and talking about offering alot on my social media, i said to tone in down in 2023 WHICH I DID. But guess? it still was NOT ENOUGH. i needed to niche down more lol! To actually grow an engaged audience you have to be speaking to a specific person on social media, let me make an example for you; I started off talking about doing logos, design this and that because i am a graphic designer right. In the midst of all that i was also talking about websites, UI and UX because i am qualified in that too. Then there was social media management and content creation which was what was generating my income at that time. That is not even all, i spoke about entrepreneurship, copywriting and much more in the digital marketing sphere. I realised hey as much as i can do all this, i do not have to talk about it all, i can offer them and people can know that i offer them. In 2023 i thought i niched down into social media management, content creation and entrepreneurship/freelancing. Fast Forward to 2024 i realise all i want to talk about is social media marketing because i love being a social media manager, i love creating content and working with influencers, i love sharing this knowledge too. Not that i will not be offering all my other services Adhoc. Now please take all my trials and errors, try to find the closest niche for you/your brand and i believe that is where the magic is!
- The above being jack of all trades resulted into another problem for me, which was just a heartbreaking mistake that i made, over committing to my clients because i obviously offer sooo many services. This just resulted in me being drained while my clients are not satisfied and sometimes looking like i actually cannot perform as well as i should be in the services i am offering. Lesson learnt painfully here i must say. I am definitely delegating more this year.
- With 2023 being my first full year as a freelancer and running a social media marketing agency, i did not know how to measure my load. How many accounts i could handle a month etc. I sometimes underestimated myself sometimes i overestimated myself ending up with too much work. Working at corporate you are only a social media manager most of the time or content creator or copywriter, hardly everything at once which is what i was used to. Working for yoursel means you have to create the strategies for the clients, create content, edit it, create graphics (me, some social media managers do not), edit, curate, schedule and then BE A SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER. Still learning here but2 024 will be better.
- Whew lastly, my word if this mistake didn’t hack me! Signing clients too late in the year. I feel like from October it is already holiday marketing strategies and holiday marketing is more work than any other season i am sure we can agree on this. I had my cap yes but signing new clients at that time just still meant a huge load of work because of holidays. I was tired, i could have given much much more to some clients and to top it all of my employee had to take a break. Hacked! In 2024 i know that i will not sign new social media marketing clients after October.
Now may this serve as a diary reminder of what to avoid in 2024 as a social media manager, marketing on social media for various businesses.
May this also serve as a guide for you to do better than me as a social media marketer and not make mistakes that could cost your business and your services.
