Rule us, Instagram, we are your servants!

Apps change but no social media platform changes more than Instagram and honestly i LOVE it. I realise now that i LOVE it. Since social media has become all about business now over the years, why not just keep things exciting by making all these changes. Neccessary and unnecesary. See at the end of the day, their main aim is to keep us on online, keep us on the app, that’s how their advertisers make money. So here are all the popping instagram updates, as of May 2025, that you need to know for your social media marketing.

  1. 2X Speed on Reels – Honestly i thought this was always there, perhaps because the reels i consume are normally short. Instagram as a whole generally is very short form video favouring. They may have extended their Reels length but the shorter the Reel the better the performance on the Instagram Algorithm. However you could not fast forward Instagram Reels before, now you can though. Personally i prefer playing my videos and even voice notes on 2X most of the time. I am impatient, okay! I also work on my phone things need to move fast not to mention how short the attention span of a 30 year old is 🙁 so this one is for all of us who relate i guess.
  2. The new instagram video editing app is here, Edits! Instagram has launched their own standalone video editing App to create Reels on, from the moment you have an idea to editing it and checking its insights. Yes you read right, Instagram Edits includes analytics. Think Capcut (and Tiktok), but do bare in mind that Edits is still new therefore the features on the app are not as many yet. We are yet to see how much more it will have to offer when they launch their subscriptions version of the App, as currently it is only the free version out. It is a pretty standard App so far, basic editing features, obviously the camera quality is questionable if you create on the app but nonetheless it’s a good one. Looking forward to seeing how Instagram will keep updating the app for more features and user friendliness.
  3. This is something i have been very excited to see, Grid Reordering! If you are on my Instagram you will know how i care about aesthetics lol and you will know how i have been super excited for this feature to launch since it’s tease. Clearly Instagram cares about aesthetics too otherwise they would not be allowing us to reorder our grids for the prettiness. The only downside to this new Instagram feature is that your posts will obviously not be in chronological order, they will be really jungled up and i can already see this frustrating me when i happen to stalk someone. Imagine one plus one not giving two you because they have swapped posts around. Sigh. Anyway, i would rather upgrade my feed stalking skills than not be happy about this update. It’s always been a dream of mine so i cannot believe Instagram did it!
  4. So i feel like Instagram had this feature before then took it away? Instagram Reposts? It never made sense to me why we cannot directly repost content and have it live on our profiles. Thanks to Tiktok i guess because Instagram is officially testing out Reels ad Posts reposts that can be found on your profile. Currently you can remix a reel or post but you have to edit it to be yours in some way first before you can repost it. I think initially they took it away to minimise people just stealing other people’s content but i mean as long as the original creator’s handle remains there and it shows it’s a repost. It should be fine.
  5. Highlights have two new updates which is weird to me because i thought Instagram wanted to get rid of Highlights? was the uproar enough for them to change their minds? I wonder. Instagram now automatically create a ‘Lately” Highlight that consists of all your stories from the previous 7 days. You can edit this highlight to remove the content you do no longer want there; I like this highlight actually. Secondly, If you finish watching all the stories of the people you follow, Instagram will start showing you their most recent Highlights. I am not a fan of Highlights in general but i thought that was also really cool.

Have you noticed any of these new Instagram updates yet? have you been practising any? what new update/feature are you most excited for? please let me know in the comments.
